How to overcome business failure

How to overcome business failure

According to Oberlo, more than 50% of small businesses fail in their first year and roughly 95% will fail within the first five years.

Now we’re not telling you this to scare you or put you off starting a business. Quite the opposite, in fact!

If you know the pitfalls that other businesses are falling into, you can make sure to avoid these when starting out on your own entrepreneurial journey.

But what are the key causes of business failure and how can you overcome them? Read on to find out.

1. You start your business for the wrong reasons

One of the key reasons that a business fails is because the motivation behind starting it was misguided. If you're hoping to start your own business so you don't have to answer to anyone, you can start work when you want and you can make cash quickly, then you're unlikely to succeed.

Instead, you need to make sure you're starting your business for the right reasons. Good reasons to start a business include:

  • You're passionate about your industry, goods or services
  • You thrive on independence
  • You love a challenge and you're not easily defeated
  • You want to manage your own time and lifestyle better

2. Your business lacks in value and uniqueness

You might have done your research and found there is a strong demand for your product, yet you're still not making enough sales. There are a couple of reasons for this.

Firstly, your approach is mediocre and you lack strong value proposition. Secondly, you’ve got a lot of competition and yet you have no unique selling point (USP) so you don't stand out from the crowd.

To get past this, you need to develop a customised approach to your cus-tomer service. You should also carefully build your brand and shout about what makes you great. This can boost your reputation and help to drive sales.

3. Not keeping up with customer needs

Did you spend all that time putting together a buyer persona only to forget about it when it really mattered? Another key reason businesses fail is be-cause they don't stay in touch with their customer’s needs.

Remember, consumer habits are always evolving and their needs will change over time.

So to avoid losing touch with your customers, be sure to keep in contact with them and regularly ask for their feedback. It’s also important to keep on top of any big industry trends or news.

4. Not managing your finances effectively

Poor financial management is one of the main reasons businesses fail. If you neglect to get a financial forecast in place at the beginning, you're setting yourself up to fail. Particularly if you're not very good at keeping track of your outgoings.

To stop this from happening, start with a solid business plan. After this, keep track of your spending down to the very last penny. You can use professional accounting/financial services, tools and apps to help you do this.

5. Leadership and management failure

Lastly, though it can be tough to admit, if your management and leadership skills are poor, you can’t lead your team to victory. For example, if you're unable to make decisions, you contradict yourself and you're reluctant to take charge.

These poor leadership skills will eventually trickle down and impact the rest of your team. To combat this, you should enhance your management skills by finding a mentor, taking classes and studying what it takes to be a great leader.
